Winter is coming..

A new retelling of one of the most famous heroes of all times, Robin Hood (2018). The movie is to be released in the last week of November and Taron Egerton is playing the lead.

Now, the things I am not too sure of, the COSTUMES, and, the fact the Taron might end up overplaying the role.

First Man (2018)

Space science is not something that excites me but I watched First Man for the sweethearts, Ryan Gosling and Claire Foy. Damien Chazelle has got a different perspective on the movie and its not only about the patriotism and victory of science, it follows a man's story and his sorrows. I think it is an amazing take on the story.

First Man shows a plaintive portrayal of Neil Armstrong's life, together with his family. Claire Foy's portrayal of Janet Armstrong is every bit realistic and powerful. Amazing performances by both of them. The scenes have been shot with great precision, whether its Gosling on the screen alone, contemplating his feelings or Foy looking at her husband and actually connecting and explaining the dilemma in a way. The background theme for the movie adds to the story and the perspective that the director wants to showcase, its sad, distant, and lamenting.

This one is definitely worth watching. If you missed it this weekend, plan it for it for the next one and trust me you won't regret.

The Irishman: teaser

You know what happens when Martin Scorsese teams up with Robert De Niro, right, BOOM! The Irishman is post production and probably one of the best movies to look out for in 2019.

The period drama stars some of the biggest, best names in terms of acting, who also happen to be Scorsese's regulars: Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel. Another exciting fact, you probably already know about, this is the first time Scorsese is working with Al Pacino! It is based on the book I Heard You Paint Houses by Charles Brandt.


Apparently, Netflix has paid a huge amount for the movie and I would have too, if I had that kind of money. The release date isn't known yet but it would be sometime in 2019.

Little Women remake: this is fancy!

Yet another remake has been announced and wait till you get to know about the cast!

Little Women is to be remade and this time by Greta Gerwig, not just that, speculations say that she will also be writing the adaption for the camera!

Now, the exciting part, the CAST:

• Meryl Streep as the rich Aunt March

I think I would have wanted Meryl to be Marmee, yes, actually. For now, I am happy to watch her to be a part of the remake. Who would have thought! Too happy with Laurie and Jo, though.

I am too excited about this one, given the cast. I think I’ll always be excited about any Little Women remake and have the right to compare it to the ’94 movie.

Capote (2005)

It feels great to share another review with you all and I hope we are all doing great!

Cheers to another movie night!

I watched Capote last week and I don't exactly know why I didn't watch this one earlier.

The movie, as the title suggests, is about Truman Capote (Breakfast at Tiffany's, yes we remember that one) and the period during which he wrote his most sensational book "In Cold Blood".

It has been directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball) based on the book written by Gerald Clarke. It is amazing, has been captured in detail (with little to no background score) and the best part, of course, is Philip Seymour Hoffman.

If only we could have more of his performances, I swear!

The movie shows the time in Truman Capote's life when he comes to know about the murder of a farm family in Kansas and calls up The New Yorker (magazine) to tell that he wants to write about it. The movie is about what follows, the incidents, struggles, Truman Capote's cunning, and expertise as a writer that turn a story into a complete book.

Harper Lee (played by Catherine Keener) was a lifelong friend with Capote so you get to see her part, as well, in making things easier for Capote. There is no mystery and many of us might already know the story, but watch this one for the beauty of story telling and the phenomena that Hoffman was, and will continue to be. Apart from Hoffman, I would say that the direction is in line with the camera work. There are shots where you don't see a zoom-in to state the obvious but a wide shot which actually lets you paint the image you want and get your own perspective. I would hate to describe the scenes and spill the beans here, but there is one in particular where a running train has been captured from such a distance that you will be left wondering if at all its a train, but then, you get the time to contemplate the story.

Although I know the post is about the movie, I still can't stop myself from mentioning another one of Hoffman's immaculate performance in DOUBT. Doubt is like a cream of performances with Meryl Streep, Viola Davis and Amy Adams in the cast. Watch these two movies and I am sure you will be able to understand the depth of the art and the impression it leaves.

Hedda Gabler (2015)

Hedda Gabler - then life might be liveable, in spite of everything

If you are an ardent period drama fan I'm sure you watch re-makes and then pass your judgement by comparing them (at least I do). Here's another one for you to judge (but enjoy before doing that).

Hedda Gabler is based on a play Henrik Ibsen, a very celebrated Norwegian playwright. 

This is what director Matthew John had to say, “I know it’s a big risk, and I know there will be many Ibsen purists who will criticise us heavily over this,” said Matthew John. “But I believe we’re only doing what Ibsen himself would have done had he been adapting the stage play into a film script.”

You might be familiar with the story but this one is going to be lavish. How do I know? Well, I have had a little time interviewing the cast. I'll soon post interviews with the cast members and Sir Benjamin Slade, the owner of the amazing Maunsel House (Somerset) where the movie has been shot.

The lead, Hedda Gabler, is played by the beautiful Rita Ramnani. Hedda is newly married and already bored of her life, living with a husband she doesn't love. Also, it stars the talented Samantha E. Hunt as Thea Helvsted.

Suffragette (2015)

Just when we were waiting for another Meryl Streep period drama, we have Suffragette (2015)!

As the name suggests this period movie is about Suffragette - women's for right to vote movement in the 19th and 20th century Britain.

Meryl Streep is of course the cherry on top of the cake besides the amazing cast - Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter, Ben Whishaw, Brendan Gleeson, Romola Garai, Anne-Marie Duff and others. Sounds promising to me.

Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) - Trailer

Weren't we all waiting for this one (at least I was).

Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) is the second screen adaptation of the famous novel by Thomas Hardy. It stars Carey Mulligan in the lead and the three handsome men are Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen and Tom Sturridge (who looks like a man, thank you moustache).

The story is about a young girl who unexpectedly inherits her uncle's property (and scores of suitors). It is a story of passion, tradition and temptation. The ever so refined accents and beautiful countryside, enough reason for me to watch this one, besides, we know the story already.

An interesting twist to what could have been a period drama through and through, The Age of Adaline's (2015) trailer promises, well, of more than one love stories, tangled!

Adaline (Blake Lively) meets with an accident and stops to age! So, there you have multiple love stories over the long decades because our heroine remains just as young as she was 50 years ago..and becomes more stylish by the decades! Delightful huh!

The movie would be releasing sometime in 2015 and I can't wait to watch Blake Lively in a period flick.

Releasing this February this period drama is about a gladiator fighting against time to save her lady love. Sounds a bit dramatic with the background of Pompeii but watch it for the love of period movies and fight sequences and Kit Harington ;). I am sure girls would.

In Secret is a story of a girl caught in a loveless marriage and what follows. Great thing is, girls will get to watch Tom Felton in an entirely different avatar. The period drama will release on 21st February.

Drama and more Drama

Many of you must have watched the movie 'Midnight in Paris' and I am sure most of you would have liked it, I loved it. There's something very original and honest about it, the way Woody Allen has captured nostalgia and the love for a period and then justified it towards the end of the drama, I think it was very original and out of the box.

Searching for the 'nostalgic moments' in movies I came across a series of episodes on the same on this site BLIP. If you think of watching television drama and drama series and what not, this is one site for all of you. Don't get me wrong, it is not one of those steal-and-upload-illegally sort of a place. It is TOTALLY legal, in fact the professional and new age directors upload their dramas on this site as a part of the new and overwhelming medium known as Web Television (we all have Internet connections but not all of us have TVs you see). It is convenient and yes, FREE!

You'd be surprised to browse through the far and wide collection of videos this site has and all for free. It is not restricted to drama series alone, you just name the category, cartoons and comics, comedy drama series, fashion, DIY, news and technology, health and fitness, etc etc.

There are staff favorites and audience favorites so you can pick whatever you like or start browsing them all alphabetically. This site is uncommonly clean and user friendly, you won't find unnecessary user comments and curses (unlike some of the other ^famous^ video sites).

Nothing happens on the Internet which could/should not be shared on Facebook (except your bank details) so you can connect your Facebook account and share with your friends whatever it is that you're watching. Other social networking sites could also be used.

Next time when you want to see some really nice drama (or anything else) do visit BLIP and enjoy yourself. It is one of the best video sites I have come across in a long time.

The holiday season is on and I guess most of you have already made plans. Does your plan include watching your favorite Period Drama? Well, which one are you most willing to watch?

Like last year, Downton Abbey Christmas Special episode would be on air on ITV. It is probably the biggest name in period drama series presently.

This year too, the special episode would be full of drama and love and betrayal. ITV has put in strong efforts in making this one and is expecting over ten million viewers worldwide!

Let me give you a head-start, somebody already has a romantic something for Branson, Lady Edith might have a new love interest, yet again and there is some more romance, involving Mrs. Patmore! This is going to be interesting and promises drama to the very end.

I love this series because of its sheer honesty and realism. There's hardly anything dramatic about it yet you enjoy watching it.

This is Call the Midwife's first Christmas Special (obviously). So, like always the Nonnatus House and its residents are busy with work even in the holiday season (sure, childbirth wouldn't wait for the holidays to finish). Jenny Lee and Chummy are uptight with their schedule. What else, nurses and nuns are trying to find the parents of a newborn and Chummy is trying to organize something (sounds like an oxymoron Chummy : Organize).

Kind Jenny is looking for the children of an elderly vagrant, so there's quite a lot of work to be done.

 I can't decide which one am I going to watch. The one with lavish drama or the one which actually celebrates childbirth.

America Hot on Period Movies

Now fans of the American period dramas won’t be deprived much since movies on American history are releasing this year and the next, let’s have a look:

Daniel Day Lewis as Abraham Lincoln,
 Licoln (2012)

• Lincoln (16^th November, 2012) – the movie is much anticipated, for two reasons I suppose, firstly, it is directed by STEVEN SPIELBERG (which is quite enough to draw traffic to the screens for about a month) and secondly, Lincoln remains to be a famous figure in American history, having said that, none other than Daniel Day Lewis is playing the part, which makes it official that the movie is going to be a big one at the year’s end.

Hyde Park on Hudson

• Hyde Park on Hudson (7^th December, 2012) - again this movie is about a U.S. President and a very famous one, Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). Unlike Lincoln, this movie is going to be a bit away from politics as it focuses on the love affair between FDR and one of his distant cousin. It brags a powerful cast, Bill Murray as FDR and Laura Linney as his lady love.

• The Butler (2013) – looks like U.S. Presidents and their lives have certainly turned very interesting, as well as the lives of the people around them because this movies centres on the life of a butler of the White House who served EIGHT presidents over a time period of thirty years. Expect good performance since the lead is played by Forest Whitaker (as Eugene Allen) and then there are the presidents, all shiny and handsome.

• The Normal Heart (2014) – is a movie about the HIV-AIDS crisis in New York in the 80’s and the work done for it by a gay Jewish-American man as he founded a prominent HIV advocacy group. Mark Ruffalo (as Ned Weeks) is in the lead, also, Alec Baldwin and Julia Roberts are starring which makes it good enough for me to watch this one (just that I don’t want Mark Ruffalo gay, he’s so charming).

Well, that’s that, American Period Drama fans won’t be starved for too long now that they have four mighty movies coming their way. Also, just in case you like American period movies (which I am sure you do) and haven’t watched The Conspirator, go ahead and feast yourself.

Hysteria

Hysteria (2011)

Hysteria is a movie about the invention of..ahem ahem ..the Vibrator. That’s a very bold topic to make a period movie on, but you can’t change the facts. The movie is directed by Tanya Wexler and stars Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett and Felicity Jones, among others.

So, this movie is about a young doctor, Mortimer Granville who is qualified and sympathetic to his patients yet not able to carve a niche for him. Mortimer (played by Hugh Dancy) lives with Edmund St. John-Smythe (played by Rupert Everett) as latter’s family support for him. Edmund is shown to be an inventor of some sorts, playing with gadgets and electricity generators.

The movie starts with ladies telling about their “problems” to Doctor Dalrymple, which he defines as HYSTERIA. Dr. Dalrymple (played by Jonathan Pryce) runs an elite clinic which deals with the ladies problems. What exactly he does to cure his patients, he gives them some “pelvic massage” (which until recently I didn’t know is suppose to be a doctor’s job). He is successful and is the father of two daughters, Charlotte Dalrymple (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and Emily Dalrymple (Felicity Jones). While Charlotte is outgoing and all about the reform in women’s life, Emily is everything a good, decent and intelligent British girl ought to be.

Young Dr. Mortimer is out work, despite of trying at a number of clinics so one day he goes to Dr. Dalrymple’s clinic to work as an assistant. He soon masters the art of “pelvic massage” and clients start to pour in at the clinic. While things are going well at Dr. Dalrymple’s, his elder daughter, Charlotte is fighting for feminine causes and resettlement, and turns short of money. Dr. Dalrymple is shown to be quite against her inferior activities, on the other hand, he thinks very well of his younger daughter, Emily, even Mortimer starts paying a great deal of attention to her.

Busy schedules and burst of clients leaves Mortimer with a stiff hand and as a consequence, clients aren’t satisfied anymore. Dalrymple throws him out on account of an unsatisfied client and now again, Mortimer gets out of work.  Then what happens is the main plot of the movie and I am not going to spoil it for you. Though there are some things I would pen down here.

Hysteria works well as a comedy, it’s not too loud, though exaggerated at some places. The opening scene itself sets the tone of the coming one and a half hour of comedy and the theme of the movie. About casting I would like to express my express disappointment, Maggie Gyllenhaal as Charlotte Dalrymple, not happening! She might as well have been Mrs. Dalrymple, I mean, look at her, no offence but she looks really mature and far too old to act as Hugh Dancy’s love interest. On the other hand, Felicity Jones, who looks like she isn’t going to shed her baby suit for years to come, looks like her daughter, not sister.  Hugh Dancy has done a good work, helpless and kind doctor, who finally falls for aunt Charlotte Dalrymple. Also, Maggie Gyllenhaal just, sort of spoils the whole period movie grace of the movie; you can be a social worker without being barbaric. Felicity Jones, didn’t have much to do or act, still she was nice in her tamed role.

Molly the Lolly, was funny and has done her part well but then you have Mrs. Castellari, simply over acted the whole thing, and it was not funny. Another thing, I couldn’t understand why did the threesome, Mortimer, Dalrymple and Edmund put on their goggles before treating Mrs. Castellari with the thing, as if something was about to get spilled.

The movie has more highs than lows and can make a good watch for you and you won’t need to carry your brain.

Jodhaa Akbar - Indian Period Movie

This is the first time I am going to write my views about an Indian period movie since its Indian Independence Day and this time triggers passion to write something related to my country.

I know India hasn't had much credit to claim when it comes to period movies, the box has been comparatively empty, but then, I thought of a movie which is a very well made period film, Jodha Akbar.

The movie stars Hritik Roshan (Akbar), Aishwarya Rai Bachhan (Jodha), Ila Arun, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Sonu Sood and the iconic Amitabh Bachhan, who has rendered his baritone voice as the narrator of the movie. The movie follows the story of the sixteenth century Mughal emperor, Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar's marriage of alliance with a rajput princess, Jodha Bai of Amer, which eventually turns out into a love story.

The movie is very beautiful to the eyes, the costumes and the sets have been designed with details. Its not just the visual and the art direction, the movie scores on each and every ground you can think of, lots of inspiration for other Indian directors and producers to make something worthwhile. The performances are amazing, especially Ila Arun's role as Maham Anga is superb!

If you like period movies and haven't seen this one yet, make haste, its a very good movie, added to that you'll get listen some great songs too!
